To help you prepare for Sacramento, we've put together some important and preliminary convention information about registration, hotel, convention schedule, and awards information.

REGISTRATION
.
There are 2 steps to register for convention:
1) Fill out the registration form.
2) Make your registration payment.
$50 – Young Democrats Member Early Registration (if you register by March 29)
$65 – Late & On-site registration (If you register AFTER March 29, there's no guarantee you will get a t-shirt)
$30 – Volunteers (Commit to at least one 2-hour volunteer shift. Rate will be eliminated when capacity is reached.) You MUST also fill out a volunteer form to be considered eligible for the rate.
$35 – DSCC Elected or Appointed CDP Delegates. You must provide proof of CDP convention registration at CYD registration pick-up, or be subject to the on-site registration fee.

THIS weekend is a momentous opportunity for you to vote on California Democratic Party (CDP) ADEM Delegates, who will represent your newly drawn Assembly District during the 2013-2014 legislative session. While CYD does not make endorsements, below is a list of known Young Dems (ages 35 and below) running up and down California.

If you are unfamiliar of your Assembly District, please follow the link here to input your address and find out which district you are allowed to vote in.

The dates and locations of each ADEM election caucus are also included from the CDP website. These dates may be imprecise and subject to change. Please consult your convener for the exact date. Typically, caucuses run for 2 – 2.5 hours since the start of registration. At this point, the doors lock and no more voting Dems are allowed to enter, so checking the time is important. Please also note that this is merely a list of those Young Dems that are known, and CYD makes no preference between slates, “non-slates,” and the like.

There are 80 Assembly Districts in California and each District will elect 12 people (six women and six men) to be members of the Democratic State Central Committee. These 12 people will represent their Assembly District for both the 2013 and 2014 State Conventions.

Again, the deadline to complete the ADEM form is Friday, December 14th at 5:00 PM.

NOTE: All candidates should confirm receipt of filing prior to the deadline. The CDP will not be responsible for failed, delayed, unreadable, or corrupted filings whether by hardcopy delivery or electronic filings such as faxes or emails or the editing of candidate statements.

Once the location and date has been set for your district, inform your friends to come out and vote! They must be physically at the location to cast their vote. If you are one of the top 6 vote getters in your gender, you have become an ADEMs Delegate!

Your Chapter’s completed Charter Application (including Chapter Membership List, Chapter Officer List, Chapter Bylaws and Chapter Report as attachments) must be sent in a single email to phogarth@youngdems.org no later than 11:59 pm, Monday, February 11, 2013.  

Sometimes chartering for CYD seems archaic, like a mystical system of formulas and star divination with unexpected rules, deadlines and expectations.  We find ourselves asking how could anyone possibly understand all the ins and outs?  Despite the legend, chartering can and will be a straightforward, open and informative process in 2013.  There have been a few changes since previous years, which will benefit the leadership of all our new and renewing chapters in their preparations.

Now, what is in it for you?  By chartering with the California Young Democrats your chapter gains official status within the California Democratic Party politics and the Young Democrats of America.

There are many benefits to becoming a member organization:

Voting Privileges:  Help influence the direction of CYD by voting on the Executive Committee, and seek opportunities for members of your chapter to serve on CYD committees and caucuses.

Election Resources:  Access to the CDP voter registration bounty program, union-printed “pledge-to-vote cards”, our text message program and voter file access for campaign invasions.

Online Chapter Technology:  Free access to DEMopolis, an online tool that allows chapters to track membership lists, create groups, send mass emails, create online petitions, event management and more.

Special Events:  Including the annual CYD State Convention in conjunction with the California Democratic Party, a weekend of chapter development and trainings at the biennial CYD Lake Tahoe Retreat and traveling around the country to participate in the Young Democrats of America National Convention.

The California Young Democrats (CYD) today released its positions on November ballot measures and a list of endorsed candidates. CYD President Jennifer Longley issued a statement on the overwhelming response of Young Dems:

“We haven’t seen such excitement on recommendations since CYD previously voted to endorse a position of HELL NO on Proposition 8 in 2008. Young Democrats are united in opposition to Proposition 32 because it is a blatant attack on California’s middle class,” said Longley. “We intend to build the structure and create a groundswell that defeats Proposition 32, passes Proposition 30 and drives voters young and old to the polls to support Democrats in November.”

******PLEASE NOTE****** this meeting, as with many of our meetings, will include unscheduled stops to allow candidates for public office and Democratic Party office to speak. As this meeting runs concurrently with the CDP elections for 19 open California DNC seats, as well as round two for CYD to consider any Democrat on Democrat Statehouse & Congressional races, we will try to accommodate all requests for candidates to speak. However, once the voting process for candidates has begun, there will be no candidates speaking until after the voting process is complete.
